STUD HISTORY
The name Tullibardine lies in family heritage, Dad's grandfather blended whisky which was under the label Tullibardine, so part of our Scottish heritage is always with us.
Mum and Dad moved west from Deniliquin, NSW, in 1960, being allocated land at Green Range in the orginal land release in the area. Green Range is approximately 75km east of Albany.
Tullibardine Murray Grey stud was established in 1966 when 12 mated classified Angus cows, 4 C grade heifers and a stud bull were purchased from Peter Smit's Koojan Hills stud, Kojonup. The Glen Return was purchased the following year. Mum and Dad purposefully selecting sires and breeders in the stud from the very beginning that proved highly fertile and good milking females.
Our primary interest has always lay in commercial cattle breeding, and from the commencement of the stud we were intent on creating a breeding program that would produce stock that would have appeal to the commercial breeder, without comprimising the traits that are unique to the Murray Grey breed. In 1977 the stud moved to its present location on Albany Highway, mainly due to the unpredictable rainfall of Green Range, and the cold northerly winds the cattle did not finish off as well as we would like. The Albany location was also a good dealcloser to markets at the time in Albany and Mt Barker.
My parents retired in 1986 and I have being running the stud and commercial cattle operation since then, however, I have always been involved in the breeding and selecting of cattle for the stud, since leaving school in 1973.
Tullibardine Murray Grey stud is now one of the oldest studs in Australia, and after nearly 40 years of breeding the majority of the Tullibardine's females have milk, thickness, soundness and are producing progeny that suit today's market. Artificial insemenation has been used extensively within the herd over the last 20 years, making best use of the leading sires within the breed.
I am a supporter of Breedplan, believing that it is the only truly objective measure of an animal's genetic potential. We use several trait leaders within our breeding program and consistently produce many junior trait leader sires.
Our bulls are offered for sale at the Monterey Annual Murray Grey and Angus sale, one of the largest and most successful sales in Australia. Bulls are also sold privately on farm.
I am always mindful of the marketplace, and as always will strive to produce above average cattle that are functional, reliable and productive. Tullibardine stud principal Alastair Murray |
